We came, We conquered, We slayed

On October 10th, 2016 (Monday), we went to Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) to attend educational slot regarding the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). UPM, a leading research university in Malaysia is located in Serdang, next to Malaysia’s administrative capital city, Putrajaya. As a world renowned centre of learning and research, UPM has attracted students and staff from all around the world making it a well-respected global entity.

In addition, UPM became the first university in the country to launch an online platform for its academic staff to impart knowledge to anyone interested. The online platform known as “Putra Massive Open Online Course” or PutraMOOC was unveiled by Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh, Education Minister 11.

Besides, PutraMOOC is the UPM’s latest public service to the community and the world at large where courses on various areas of knowledge are made available through video lectures, interactive forums , chats, quizzes and other forms of assessment.

The programme that is considered a 21st century learning environment, is open to all who are interested, free of charge.

They only need to register online HERE.

Available courses are on “Agriculture and Man” and “Malay Arts”. In fact, through PutraMOOC, UPM is also offering the compulsory course on “Islamic Civilization and Asian Civilization” (TITAS) that can be used by freshmen in all public universities. Indeed, this new platform of learning is also in line with the National Higher Education Strategic Plan that includes life-long learning, E-learning, internationalisation and knowledge transfer.

Personally, I think this is an excellent initiative to run online courses using such a prestige platform. The interesting part is, they also have their own studio. Where they will shoot (inside or outside) the studio, all the editing process will be held in the studio. The studio is not really big, but they have all the resources needed in order to run this MOOC effectively. The first word that came out from my mouth was ‘WOWWW…gempak ah.’

Okay now, let’s take a look at the studio;

See, the studio is not as big as I expected to be

All in all, I love Dr. Rose’s idea by bringing us to PutraMOOC, like old Chinese proverb says;

Tell me, I’ll forget. Show me, I may remember. But involve me, and I’ll understand”.

YASSS! Instead of theoretically understand about MOOC, we practically understand it.
